Have you ever heard someone tell you that fruit contains too much sugar? Or that they limit their sugar intake, so they avoid fruits!? Well, I’m here to debunk this nutrition myth and tell you that it’s OK to eat fruit, and actually preferred! The sugar in fruits are natural sugars, and these sugars are much different than added sugars. There’s a reason why we are always told to eat our fruits and vegetables, and this is because fruit provides us with so much more than just the sugar.

Fruit contains fiber This is one of the reasons why sugar is different in fruit compared to added sugars. Fiber helps slows down the absorption of sugar, which helps prevent blood sugar spikes. Fiber is also essential for digestive and gut health.

Fruit is Heart Healthy Soluble fiber in particular that is found in fruits such as apples and citrus fruits plays a key role in lowering blood cholesterol by reducing the absorption of LDL cholesterol. Excess LDL cholesterol can lead to plaque buildup in your arteries.

Fruit contains antioxidants Antioxidants are molecules that help fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are shown to be linked to various diseases. Fruits and other plants contain the highest amount of antioxidants.

Fruit is nutrient DENSE For example, for 65 calories of raspberries (1 cup) you get 8 grams of fiber and 32mg of vitamin C! Various fruits contain many different vitamins and minerals such as potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A etc. The more variety of color you eat the better, so eat that rainbow!

Not to mention, fruit is nature’s candy! It is naturally sweet and delicious. So next time someone tells you they cut out fruit to avoid “all sugar” ask them why?
